Healthy Holidays Part 4: Happy Easter!

When you think of Easter, do visions of chocolate bunnies, Cadbury eggs, and peeps dance through your head? Easter, like so many other holidays, is often characterized by gorging on sweets, but there are many ways that you can get into the spirit of Easter without sacrificing a healthy lifestyle.

Continuing on our healthy holiday theme, here are 5 tips from TAO for a healthier Easter:

1. Dyeing and hunting for Easter eggs is a great tradition that keeps you and the kids up and moving. Avoid filling plastic eggs with more candy and go for the real thing (just make sure you remember all of your hiding places!). And afterwards, don’t let the eggs go to waste, make deviled eggs for the Easter meal!

2. An Easter basket doesn’t have to be full of just sugary candy – add some fun toys like bubbles, a jump rope or a game to keep the kids entertained and active. Trade out the least healthy treats for healthier ones like dark chocolate with nuts or berries, or even fruit. Here are some other Easter Basket ideas.

3. Trade out the heavy recipes in your Easter meal for some lighter options! Trade the ham for fish or poultry! Take advantage of the fresh spring greens and make a big salad! Here are some healthy Easter Brunch recipes.

5. As always, BE ACTIVE. If the weather is nice go for a walk or go play Frisbee together in the park. If April brings showers, get the family together to play some fun and active indoor games like charades or hide and seek.
